A solar company recently set a new record for solar cell efficiency by converting 27.6 percent of sunlight into power. This low number represents more than twice the efficiency of solar cells currently in use. Scientists suggest the maximum efficiency possible is 33.5 percent for a single-junction cell, suggesting that continued spending on development may not provide worthwhile returns until scientists develop new types of solar cells. Right now, scientists believe they will eventually achieve 30 percent solar power efficiency for a photovoltaic cell by using the latest technology.
